Growing up with a prosthetic device I always had to work twice as hard to prove myself and hope for an opportunity in a society at a time that did not understand athletes with disabilities. My core values revolve around hard work, respect, discipline, and dedication promoting success. I feel success is not gauged on wins and losses but the journey taken. Each player responds to adversity in different ways throughout their journey. Volleyball has so many good parallels to life lessons and so many tools to give athletes opportunities to succeed in a competitive environment similar to life. Volleyball has enriched my life in so many ways. I truly have a passion to utilize my knowledge on the court, on the bench, and growing up with a disability to help young athletes meet those challenges head on.   I want all of our athletes to have the confidence to play outside the box and to take risks. Volleyball is the ultimate team sport and an awesome tool to prepare our athletes for life! This sport is one of my true passions and I hope I can influence our youth in a positive light and prepare them for what life has to bring.

Kelly Hooks

Head Coach

XZone 17 Red Elite

Born and raised on the beach in Florida, I grew up playing both sand and indoor volleyball and ever since then, it’s become one of my greatest passions.

I am Kelly Hooks, aka Coach K, and I’ve been playing volleyball, softball and tennis since I could walk! I was a defensive specialist and an outside and right side hitter. I love the game of volleyball and I love the strategy behind every point in every match. My high school team, Valpo HS went to the state tournament in Indiana every season I played, with excellent results. After high school, I was recruited by several D I and D II schools but wanted to focus on my academics. I attended Purdue my freshman year where I played club ball and then transferred to University of Richmond and continued playing club coed open and a sand in the Fredericksburg league.

Following college graduation in 2004, I started working as a government contractor with OPM where I stayed for 13 years. In my early 30s I realized I wanted to teach and coach on a full time basis and made a career change to a PE teacher and coach. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I’ve been to enjoying every minute of it!

I’ve been coaching volleyball for almost 20 years. I started working volleyball camps when I was 18 in college and I’ve been hooked on coaching ever since! I’ve coached the Carmel Wildcats MS, JV, and Varsity teams for the last three seasons, and we had a record of the 13-4 at the end of the 2019 season and ran volleyball camps and every summer.

I am so excited to have the chance to coach the  16 Red  team this season and I’m looking forward to working with each player to improve  their skills and motivate them to be the best volleyball player and person that they can be! It’s going to be an awesome season and  thank you for the opportunity to mentor your student athletes!

Michael Bowes

Head Coach
XZone 15 Red

2020-2021 is Coach Mike Bowes' second year as a head coach at Xzone. Prior to joining us, he founded the athletic program at Grace Christian School in 2013. He served as the Athletic Director to the GCS Kings in 2013 - 2014 and Volleyball Coach from 2013 - 2018 to both boys and girls. His teams won two regular season Championships and three Conference Sportsmanship Awards during his involvement. As a player, Mike primarily competed indoor at the Open and A level. He now enjoys playing sand quads leisurely.

Mike's two children, Caedon and Emma are both athletes who he has coached over the years. He owns and operates a small business in Mechanicsville where he and his wife, Marianne live in a 220 year old home that they renovated three years ago.

"I enjoy coaching at Xzone Volleyball Club for a number of reasons, but the emphasis on the player development is what most impresses me. As a parent to two teenage children, preparing them for the next level, so to speak, is part of the job. I coach with that same philosophy"
